But what goes into planning an effective lesson? In this 90-minute session, teachers will have the opportunity to delve into lesson design using a core planning tool The Guide to Core Issues. Here, the big questions about the what, why, who and how of lesson design will be discussed.
10-Minute Routines to Develop Problem Solving Strategies
To have mathematical power, students need to have a wide range of problem-solving strategies.
These strategies can be named and developed using carefully designed 10-minute math routines. In this session, participants will have the opportunity to learn about techniques they can use to develop critical problem-solving strategies in their own classrooms.

- Video of conferences. Transcripts of video shared will be used to highlight key assessment techniques.

- Specific conferring tools to help them quickly gather information about students’ mathematical understanding.

- Video of classroom talk. Here, transcripts of video will be used to highlight and name specific moves teachers are using and how these impact student talk and learning.
- Specific talk moves they can use in their own teaching.
- Reference materials for future reading on the topic of how to create rich classroom discussions.

In this 90-minute session, teachers will have the opportunity to delve into lesson design using a core planning tool The Guide to Core Issues. Here, the big questions about the what, why, who and how of lesson design will be discussed.

- Specific lessons to think about how to unpack the mathematical goals of the lesson and determine how to structure the lesson to meet the needs of all students.
- How to design the lesson; this will include how to introduce a lesson, how to structure student work time (whether individual or in partnerships), and the role of the math share and how they can use it to support and deepen student reasoning and communication skills.
- Specific planning tools to help them in planning their own lessons in the future.
- Examples of mathematical learning trajectories and how to use these critical learning pathways in lesson design.
